Twenty Four
Day 306.
Getting our first live prisoner was the damndest thing Iâve ever seen.
It took the EFAs six days to get another mother ship here. In the meantime, they moved their big ships well away from our planet, and we continued sending bombs at them. The radar showed the eight other ships, the two escorts and six debris sweepers, were now arrayed between the remaining mother ship and us, and their combined firepower, along with the fighters they kept launching each time bombs approached, meant we didnât get enough hits to send it off as well.
We did try aiming at the support ships, choosing one at random, and then aiming at all of them at the same time, but they still had enough firepower we didnât do any serious damage. Since it was keeping them occupied though, and well away from the planet, those responsible for the bombs stepped it up rapidly, so we were constantly, but randomly, sending them up.
It gave us some breathing space to give squadrons some time off, and get more converted over to the new fighters. I managed a few days off to go home, but then was back to either training with my pilots and other squadrons, or training controllers.
When the new mother ship turned up, things changed again. The first ship continued to launch fighters to counter our bombs. But the second one as soon as it arrived launched its full hundred fighters at us.
We scrambled fifteen squadrons, with mine and nine others heading for space, and the other five heading for the most likely target for them, which was where the bomb launchers were. We had extra time to meet them given how far away they were coming from, but after exchanging opening fire, they ignored us, and kept on going.
That meant we lost position while we swung around behind them, and had to chase them back again. Firing all the way to be sure, but without doing much effective hitting from what was long range.
They dived straight into the atmosphere at full speed, and headed straight for the launchers. Our five squadrons down there started up towards them, and outnumbered as they were, they managed to break up their formations, so when we caught up, we had the advantage of intact flights.
For the first time ever, none of the EFAs went home.
I only managed one full kill this time, but what happened after I put a set of pulses through the EFAâs engine, was really surprising.
The plane started going down. With the battle almost over, I was looking to see if there were any targets left within my reach, when I noticed a different colour dot on the radar screen coming towards me. Feeling safe enough, I rolled my plane so I could see what it was. I lost control of my lower jaw for a bit.
Coming up below both my flight and the going down EFA was what appeared to be a bomber. Itâs four propeller engines had been replaced
